5. Cognitive computing
Computers used to be good at structured tasks – like mathematics – and bad at unstructured tasks, such as reading and comparing large numbers of documents. IBM’s Watson computer changed that. Not content with beating the champion players of the US gameshow Jeopardy! in 2011, Watson is now used to recommend cancer treatments at a leading US hospital. Closer to home, it is answering questions of Melbourne’s Deakin University students and has even been employed in the wealth management group at ANZ Bank.
