2. Slam dunk

One of the slickest and most difficult basketball moves, where the ball is jammed through the hoop using one or both hands. Elsewhere, it’s something done with a guaranteed outcome. “That presentation was a slam dunk. The contract is ours for sure.”

Some might wonder why a slam dunk (worth two points in a game) is a more popular analogy than a shot from beyond the arc (three points). It’s probably because three-pointers weren’t introduced into elite competition until the late 1970s, long after basketballers were dunking. That and the fact that “slam dunk” sounds much more impressive.
